Maqbool Fida Husain (1913-2011) was a foundational figure in the history of modern Indian art. Born in British India and celebrated as a national artist by independent India, he saw himself as a global nomad. He was an early example of the transcultural artist, open and responsive to the energies of diverse societies, which nourished his lifelong quest for a space of belonging. During his last years, Husain explored his ancestral connections with Yemen and eventually made his home in Doha and was honoured with Qatari citizenship. His life and art form a bridge between West Asia and South Asia, as well as between modernity and the deep histories of a transcontinental swathe extending from Morocco and Mali to Central Asia and Indonesia.

The Mathaf publication, M F Husain: Horses of the Sun (2020) is the expanded publication of the exhibition, M. F. Husain: Horses of the Sun, presented at Mathaf in March 2019. Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf, will introduce the evening and speak about the 2019 M F Husain exhibition, placing it in the context of Mathaf’s curatorial programme and vision. This will be followed by a talk by Ranjit Hoskote, curator of the exhibition and editor of the volume, on M F Husain, his art and its multiple contexts.

The event will be in English and simultaneous Arabic translation will be provided.
