Hidden artwork 1

This artwork is by an artist from Qatar who is heavily inspired by her cultural identity.

She focuses on local historical fashion worn by women and girls as a means of highlighting Qatari heritage. Vogue article says that this artist is a pioneer in the Qatari art scene and is one of the first Qatari women to receive an art degree and practice it professionally, setting an example for generations of Qatari women to come, while transcending borders with her art.

This mixed media painting references a traditional head-covering made from sheer black fabric with gold detailing. Referred to as a Bukhnaq in Arabic, it is a garment worn exclusively by young girls which was common practice in pre-modern society. Nowadays, however, it is associated with cultural festivities and occasions (e.g. Qatar National Day).

Hidden artwork 2

The author of this artwork is Palestinian-American visual artist who is known for her abstract style. Born in Jerusalem, her identity has been shaped by her lived experience of the Nakba – the forced displacement of the native population of Palestine which took place in 1948.

Her work is housed in public and private collections around the world, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (New York), the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris), and the Palestinian Museum (Birzeit). This painting is visually striking due to its concentration of red hues; it is a great introduction to her take on visual abstraction. Enjoy flourishing of red, with love from Jerusalem.
