Irrespective of the era in which it was created, the interpretation of an artwork continually evolves through the passage of time and across shifting discourses.

Resolutions: Evolving Realities revisits the past by bringing together works commissioned by and exhibited at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art. At its centre are artworks from two of the institution’s inaugural exhibitions from 2010—Told | Untold | Retold: 23 Stories of Journeys Through Time and Space and Interventions: A Dialogue Between the Modern and the Contemporary, among others. It also presents for the first time a large-scale sculptural artwork by renowned Iraqi artist Ismail Fattah al-Turk, produced during the artist residency programme that preceded the opening of Mathaf as a public museum.

Extending the commemoration of Mathaf’s 15-year anniversary Resolutions: Evolving Realities is a testament to the museum’s ongoing engagement with diverse interdisciplinary and artistic communities. It reflects its journey towards becoming the collaborative platform it is known as today. The exhibited artworks are a result of the museum’s foundational aim to support innovative efforts that challenge the conventional understanding of modern and contemporary art production. “Time” is the common thread linking the multimedia pieces on view, weaving together notions of fluidity and transformation. The passage of “Time” has augmented the original artistic narratives underpinning each one, leading to an accumulation of multi-layered meanings.

Featured in this exhibition are 10 intergenerational artists and collectives who express personal, cultural, and sociopolitical reality through distinctive voices. Re-examining their artworks today reveals how some of the issues they addressed have persisted and morphed over the past 15 years. As opposed to enshrining the pieces within a fixed perspective, Resolutions: Evolving Realities offers alternative decolonial accounts that present them within an expanded context. This aligns with Mathaf’s research and curatorial methodologies, (re)highlighting the core of the institution’s community-driven process.

Plan your visit to see the first iteration of Resolutions: Celebrating 15 years of Mathaf, on view until 8 August 2026.
