Zouina Ait Slimani holds a PhD from the University of Geneva and specialises in artistic practices in the Arab world, with a particular focus on the critical and identity dimensions of art writing in colonial and postcolonial contexts. Her research includes work on Iraqi painter and sculptor Dia al-Azzawi and the Maghrebi avant-gardes (1950–1970), followed by a doctoral dissertation on the emergence of art criticism in Iraq (1922–1972) that explored its aesthetic and political implications. Her interests also extend to the limits of cosmopolitanism, examined through Iraqi and Arab artists of the École de Paris and the transnational flow of art criticism between Iraq and Lebanon. Ait Slimani is developing a book on Jamil Hamoudi's Parisian period and is on the Manazir International advisory board.
